PSG Crushes Villarreal 6-0 and Stuns Spanish Press
Four goals in less than eight minutes, a final 6-0 victory at La Ceramica: PSG inflicted a historic thrashing on Villarreal in the Champions League, sparking alarm among Spanish media who compare the Parisian club to Mike Tyson.
Paris Saint-Germain crushed Villarreal 6-0 on the pitch at La Ceramica, scoring four goals in just seven minutes and thirty-five seconds to settle the match before it truly began. The victory, achieved without Ousmane Dembélé and Marquinhos, brings PSG’s tally to four wins in as many Champions League matches this season.
The Spanish press spared no superlatives. For daily AS, “a true earthquake reduced La Ceramica to dust” from the opening moments, while Marca chose the boxing ring metaphor to describe the evening: “In the purest Mike Tyson style. Coming out of the corner, facing a terrified opponent whose legs are shaking. One punch, then another, then another… and down for the count. Never has a football match so resembled a fight from the legendary American boxer.” El País, for its part, describes a PSG that is a “cold and precise executioner who toys with you with the ball and cruelly punishes the slightest mistake”.
The result takes on particular resonance given remarks made the day before by Villarreal manager Inigo Pérez. Mundo Deportivo recalls that the coach had warned: “PSG smells fear and shows no mercy.” Words described as “entirely prophetic” in light of the thrashing received.
This success comes two weeks after a 4-2 victory over Barcelona, who were then on an eleven-game winning streak. The depth of the squad assembled by Luis Enrique particularly impresses Iberian observers. For Sport, “PSG is a genuine scandal” that “dominates the Champions League by a wide margin”, while AS speaks of a club that has become “a tyrant” capable of crushing a Liga heavyweight away from home in the absence of its key players.
The rout also sparked anger among Villarreal supporters, who booed their team from half-time onwards. AS did not spare the Yellows: “The least you can do is fight tooth and nail on every action as if it were the last. You don’t endure an entire season for this.” Radio station Cadena COPE sums up the general mood by describing PSG’s European run as a “triumphal march”, a phrase that, given the results, seems hardly exaggerated.
