Olympique de Marseille have reportedly reached an agreement with Tanguy Ndombélé for what would be their first summer signing, according to reports on the eve of the transfer window closure.

The 29-year-old midfielder has been a free agent since departing OGC Nice on July 1st. His spell on the Côte d’Azur was hardly convincing: over two seasons, the former Lyon player made just 38 appearances, scoring 2 goals and providing 3 assists. Trained at Lyon, Ndombélé later joined Tottenham before going out on loan multiple times.

The announcement of this agreement has received a decidedly reserved welcome. Pundit Daniel Riolo made no attempt to hide his scepticism: “Oh my god… Yeah no, that’s… That’s going to be too many gambles.” Walid Acherchour, who broke the story, shares these doubts: “He’s not in the best physical and athletic condition. He’s a guy who will need to be rebuilt.”

The deal remains to be officially confirmed, and there is no guarantee that Ndombélé will ultimately wear a Marseille shirt. If the agreement goes through, the Phocaean club is betting on the player’s ability to rediscover his best form after a difficult period.
