Olise lights up France-Italy with stunning free-kick, historic double at Stade de France
Michael Olise opened the scoring for France against Italy on Friday at Stade de France with a perfectly placed free-kick into the top corner, becoming the first player in the history of the French national team to score two free-kicks in that stadium and to be decisive in the first three matches under the same manager.
Michael Olise unlocked the situation for France against Italy on Friday at Stade de France, beating Gianluigi Donnarumma with a free-kick into the top corner. The Bayern Munich winger thus scores his second goal from a free-kick at the Saint-Denis venue, a first in the history of the French national team.
Set up by Rayan Cherki as Zinédine Zidane’s side had been frustrated by Donnarumma since the start of the second half, Olise unleashed a left-footed strike that hit the bar at the level of the goalkeeper and Nazionale captain’s top corner. A high-quality finish that energized Stade de France and gave Zidane a triumphant return to the stadium where he himself wrote part of his legend.
The French left-footer is in exceptional form since the start of the season. With Bayern Munich, he has 8 goals in 7 matches across all competitions. With the French national team, he has already been decisive in the first three matches of the Zidane era: an assist for Kylian Mbappé during the manager’s debut in Turkey, a goal in added time (88th minute) to snatch victory in Brussels last Monday against Belgium, and now this opening goal against Italy.
According to Stats Foot, Olise thus becomes the very first French player to be decisive in the first three matches under the same manager. He had already scored a free-kick at Stade de France in March 2025 against Croatia, and no French international had previously managed to score two in that venue.
Crowning a 2026 World Cup already historic on a personal level — he emerged as the tournament’s leading passer with seven assists — this new display of brilliance confirms that Olise is no longer just a creative genius: he is now one of the most reliable finishers for the French national team.
