Nico Gonzalez joins Newcastle for up to £52m as Man City's midfield exodus deepens

Manchester City have confirmed the sale of midfielder Nico Gonzalez to Newcastle United in a deal worth up to £52million, completing a move that sees the 24-year-old depart the Etihad just 18 months after his arrival from Porto.

City paid £50million to sign Gonzalez from Porto in January 2024, and while the Spaniard initially established himself as a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s midfield, his influence faded sharply in the second half of last season. He was then overlooked for Mateo Kovacic in the Community Shield and dropped further down the pecking order when Marc Guehi started ahead of him in midfield against Crystal Palace.

The transfer marks another significant departure from a City squad that has shed considerable midfield depth this summer. Gonzalez joins Rodri, Bernardo Silva, and Tijjani Reijnders as senior midfielders to leave the club since the end of last season — a wave of exits that has reshaped the engine room Guardiola built his recent dominance around.

City have moved to address the losses, signing Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi, and are understood to remain keen on Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez as they look to rebuild the position.

Gonzalez had publicly expressed a desire to remain at the club earlier in the summer and had spoken of his wish to work under new City head coach Enzo Maresca. Those plans have since changed, and the Spaniard will instead link up with Newcastle at St James’ Park, where he is expected to become a central figure in Eddie Howe’s midfield.

In 59 appearances for City, Gonzalez showed enough quality to suggest he can thrive with regular football — something the Etihad was no longer able to guarantee him heading into the new campaign.
