Manchester United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como has intensified scrutiny on manager Michael Carrick, with a string of high-profile names already being discussed as potential successors at Old Trafford.

Julian Nagelsmann, Eddie Howe, Kieran McKenna, Fabian Hurzeler and Antonio Conte have all been mentioned in connection with the role, according to reports from the Mail Online and the Telegraph. Despite the pressure mounting, Carrick is understood to remain in his position ahead of United’s upcoming fixture against Bournemouth.

Of the names in circulation, Hurzeler is the only one currently in employment, continuing to manage Brighton and Hove Albion as they compete in both the Premier League and European competition. The Telegraph has reported that the German coach has admirers at Old Trafford, though he has no release clause in his contract. Given the fees Brighton have previously commanded for departing coaches, any approach for Hurzeler could require a record-breaking compensation package.

Nagelsmann, Howe, McKenna and Conte are all currently without clubs. Nagelsmann most recently managed the German national team, stepping down after a disappointing World Cup campaign. Howe, long linked with the United job following successful spells at Bournemouth and Newcastle United, parted ways with the Magpies during the summer before the new Premier League season began.

McKenna had been considered a candidate during earlier speculation over Erik ten Hag’s future, with United and Chelsea both reported to have held talks with the Northern Irishman during his time at Ipswich Town. Having stepped down in June 2026 and initially seeking a break from management, McKenna is already being touted for a return to the dugout.

Conte’s name has also surfaced in recent days, with reports suggesting intermediaries had proposed the Italian as a candidate following his departure from Napoli. However, the Telegraph has since confirmed that Conte is not being considered, as he does not fit the managerial framework United are looking to implement.

Carrick’s position is described as secure for the time being, but the scale of the defeat to Como — a side newly promoted to Serie A — has left the club facing uncomfortable questions about the direction of the project at Old Trafford.
