Mourinho drives Real Madrid toward Dias and Enzo Fernandez in experienced-player overhaul

José Mourinho has been granted primary control over Real Madrid's summer recruitment, with Rúben Dias and Enzo Fernández topping his list. The shift marks a deliberate move away from youth, with new arrivals averaging nearly 29 years of age.

José Mourinho is shaping Real Madrid’s summer transfer window as its primary recruitment architect, with Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández and Manchester City centre-back Rúben Dias identified as his top targets, according to ESPN.

The elevated authority Mourinho now holds represents a meaningful departure from the role afforded to his predecessors. Where Carlo Ancelotti and others routinely saw reinforcement requests delayed or ignored, Mourinho is reportedly driving target identification, priority-setting, and the pace at which the club acts once a name is agreed internally. The shift was formalised at a summit held on 9 June at Madrid’s Hotel Santo Mauro, where Mourinho met director general José Ángel Sánchez, chief scout Juni Calafat, and super-agent Jorge Mendes to map out the overhaul.

The numbers illustrate how sharply the philosophy has changed. Real Madrid’s 2025 signings averaged 21 years of age. This summer’s arrivals — Marc Cucurella (27) from Chelsea for €55 million, Bernardo Silva (31) on a free transfer from Manchester City, and Ibrahima Konaté (27) following the expiry of his Liverpool contract — average nearly 29. Denzel Dumfries (28) is expected to follow from Inter Milan for around €20 million to replace the departing Dani Carvajal. Mourinho is not building for 2030; the squad is being assembled to compete immediately.

Fernández, 24, is high on Mourinho’s midfield shortlist, though the pursuit carries significant financial complications. The Argentina international has not concealed his desire to play in Spain, but Chelsea’s valuation and Madrid’s spending appetite are not aligned. Diario AS report that Chelsea are seeking around €138 million for Fernández, while Madrid’s preference is to remain below €100 million plus bonuses — a gap that would need to close considerably before formal negotiations could progress.

Mourinho has described his midfield requirements in terms of “leadership, nonstop work rate and a fiercely competitive edge” — a profile Fernández fits closely after finishing last season as one of the more complete central midfielders in the Premier League.

Dias, 27, represents the defensive priority. His experience, physicality, and proven performance at the highest level align with the veteran-led model Mourinho is constructing. No fee details have been reported for a potential move from City.

The recruitment drive is unfolding against an unusual institutional backdrop. Mourinho signed his contract to return as Madrid manager while the club’s presidential elections added a layer of complexity to the appointment — though that has not visibly slowed the transfer activity taking shape around him.
