JJ Gabriel's four demands that pushed Manchester United's academy star toward the exit
JJ Gabriel's representatives made a series of demands to Manchester United before requesting the 16-year-old's registration be cancelled last month. The club had gone to considerable lengths to keep him, including arranging meetings with Ruben Amorim and Sir Alex Ferguson.
JJ Gabriel’s representatives submitted a list of demands to Manchester United before formally requesting the teenager’s registration be cancelled last month, according to reports. The 16-year-old academy prodigy had been on course to become the club’s youngest-ever first-team player before relations broke down.
United had invested significantly in keeping Gabriel at Old Trafford. The club arranged a meeting with then-head coach Ruben Amorim, organised an introduction to Sir Alex Ferguson, and told the youngster he could become the future face of the club. He was regularly involved in training under Michael Carrick and featured for the senior side during pre-season, including an unofficial appearance in a friendly against Atletico Madrid.
Despite those efforts, Gabriel’s camp made clear that a permanent place in first-team training — not just pre-season involvement — was expected. Sky Sports reported that Gabriel was instructed by his family not to return to Carrington alongside the club’s U21 players at the start of pre-season, with the expectation that he would train exclusively with the senior squad.
On the administrative side, United had already accepted Gabriel’s request to be assigned the No. 77 squad number and petitioned the Premier League to allow him to wear ‘Gabriel JR’ on the back of his shirt. ESPN reported both requests were granted by the club.
Gabriel had also been eligible to appear in the Premier League, Carabao Cup, and Champions League this season, though he was omitted from the club’s UEFA A list, ruling him out of the victory over Sabah. While awaiting his senior bow, he scored two goals and contributed two assists across two U21 appearances and added a hat-trick for the U19s against Sabah in the UEFA Youth League.
While United rejected the formal request to cancel his registration, Gabriel could still secure a move abroad if he holds a European passport through either parent. He has since been linked with several leading European clubs, though no official transfer has yet materialised.
