Four demands JJ Gabriel's camp made before requesting to leave Manchester United
JJ Gabriel's representatives made a series of demands to Manchester United before the 16-year-old academy prospect asked to have his registration terminated, with the club reportedly meeting each request in an attempt to keep him.
JJ Gabriel’s camp presented Manchester United with a series of demands before ultimately requesting the 16-year-old’s registration be terminated last month, according to reports. Despite the club’s efforts to accommodate the teenager — who had been earmarked as a potential record-breaker at Old Trafford — Gabriel’s representatives pushed for conditions that underlined the scale of their ambitions for the attacking midfielder.
United reportedly accepted Gabriel’s request to be assigned the No.77 squad number for the current season and went as far as asking the Premier League to permit ‘Gabriel JR’ to appear on the back of his shirt — an unusual concession for a player yet to make his official senior debut.
A guaranteed spot in first-team training was another condition laid out by Gabriel’s camp. Sky Sports reported that his family instructed him not to return to Carrington alongside the club’s other U21 players at the start of pre-season, with the expectation that he would instead join the senior squad when they reported a week later.
Game time was also a sticking point. The Manchester Evening News reported that Gabriel’s representatives felt he should be receiving meaningful minutes in United’s competitive fixtures rather than being restricted to academy football. The teenager had already been given an unofficial run-out in a pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid, and a formal first-team debut had appeared imminent.
Beyond the football itself, United went to considerable lengths to demonstrate Gabriel’s standing at the club. He was introduced to former manager Sir Alex Ferguson and given a meeting with then-head coach Ruben Amorim. Club officials told Gabriel he could become the future face of Manchester United, and he trained regularly under Michael Carrick with the senior group.
Gabriel had given United plenty of reason to invest in keeping him. He won the U18 Premier League Player of the Season award last term and opened the current campaign with two goals and two assists in two U21 appearances, adding a hat-trick for the U19s against Sabah in the UEFA Youth League.
Despite United denying the termination request, Gabriel could still engineer a move abroad if he holds a European passport through either parent. Several top European clubs have already been linked with the teenager, though no official transfer has taken place.
