More than half of Premier League clubs break transfer records in a summer of historic spending

Eleven Premier League clubs have broken their transfer records this summer, with four of the five most expensive deals in the division’s history completed in a single window that has already surpassed last season’s record total of £3 billion.

The headline moves came from Liverpool and Manchester City in the final days of the window. Liverpool paid Paris Saint-Germain an initial £106m — potentially rising to £123m — for winger Bradley Barcola, while City followed by signing former Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez for £125m, matching the British record set just 12 months earlier by Barcola’s new team-mate Alexander Isak. Earlier in the window, Elliot Anderson joined City for £116m and Morgan Rogers moved to Chelsea for £117m, completing a quartet of nine-figure deals.

Tottenham were among the most active clubs, breaking their own record twice. Mateus Fernandes arrived from West Ham for £85m before Sandro Tonali’s move from Newcastle pushed the club record to an initial £92.5m, with the deal carrying the potential to become a fifth £100m-plus transfer of the summer. Savio’s £75m switch from City also featured in Spurs’ summer business, with manager Roberto De Zerbi acknowledging: “The transfer market is crazy.”

Coventry broke their club record four times across the window, moving from Aurele Amenda’s initial £15.4m arrival through to Caleb Yirenkyi’s £23.1m deal. Three clubs also set new benchmarks specifically to sign goalkeepers: James Trafford cost Leeds £40m, while Hull’s record was broken twice — first by Carl Rushworth’s permanent move and then by Nobel Mendy’s £22m arrival.

Aston Villa and Ipswich each broke their records on two separate occasions, while Mamadou Sangare at Brentford, Luka Vuskovic at Brighton, and Liam Delap at Nottingham Forest were all £40m-plus club-record signings. Nine deals in total carried an initial fee of £75m or more, a list that includes City’s signing of Ayyoub Bouaddi and Arsenal’s acquisition of Bruno Guimaraes, alongside £65m moves for Carlos Baleba to Manchester United and Nicolas Jackson to Aston Villa.

On the other side of the ledger, Newcastle generated over £235m from the sales of Tonali, Guimaraes, and Anthony Gordon, while Aston Villa banked £50m-plus fees for Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins in addition to the Rogers deal.
