Roche injury hands teenage prodigy Muller a shot at Springboks history against Ulster
Jonathan Roche has been ruled out of the Stormers' URC clash against Ulster at DHL Stadium, with 19-year-old Markus Muller stepping in at inside centre. Muller, already the Stormers' youngest-ever debutant, could break Frans Steyn's 20-year record as the Springboks' youngest cap next month.
Jonathan Roche has been ruled out of the Stormers’ United Rugby Championship fixture against Ulster at the DHL Stadium, forcing head coach John Dobson to reshuffle his midfield for the second consecutive week. The nature and severity of the injury have not been disclosed.
Captain Ruhan Nel will now partner 19-year-old Markus Muller at centre, with Muller wearing the No.12 jersey vacated by Roche. It is the second time the teenager has filled in for the 23-year-old, having started last week’s 52-40 win over the Scarlets and played the full 80 minutes.
Muller’s rise has been rapid. He became the Stormers’ youngest-ever debutant when he came off the bench earlier this season at 18 years, 9 months and 19 days, and was among six uncapped players named in Rassie Erasmus’ 37-man Nations Championship squad this week.
Should Muller feature in any of South Africa’s three Tests against Italy, France and Ireland next month, he would break Frans Steyn’s 20-year-old record as the Springboks’ youngest-ever international.
Roche’s absence comes at a sensitive moment for the Irish-qualified midfielder. The Cape Town-born centre is reportedly weighing his options ahead of the end of the season, with Irish provinces said to be monitoring his availability. Eligible through his paternal grandmother, Roche has been identified as a potential long-term solution to Ireland’s ageing midfield stock.
Dobson had already made several changes to his original selection before Roche’s late withdrawal added further disruption. With Ulster arriving at the DHL Stadium, the Stormers will now rely on Muller to hold the midfield together — a task the teenager has so far handled with composure beyond his years.
