Mbappé returns to individual training but Villarreal start remains uncertain
Kylian Mbappé resumed individual work at Valdebebas on Monday as he recovers from a left-knee hyperextension, with Real Madrid targeting the Villarreal fixture on Saturday 10 October — though no return date has been confirmed.
Kylian Mbappé returned to Valdebebas on Monday 5 October for individual rehabilitation work, but Real Madrid stopped short of confirming the forward will be available for their La Liga meeting with Villarreal on Saturday 10 October. The session included gym exercises, physiotherapy and ball work on the pitch, yet Mbappé has not rejoined full group training or received medical clearance to play.
Mbappé sustained the injury while scoring France’s winning goal against Turkey on 25 September. He left the national-team camp and was examined in Madrid the following day, after which the club confirmed a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee. No recovery timeline was given in the official medical statement, though early reports suggested an absence of 10 to 12 days — a window that placed Villarreal as a possible target rather than a guaranteed return.
Monday’s update from the club described progress in his rehabilitation while leaving the final selection decision open. His availability will depend on how the knee responds to further training sessions before Saturday, and whether he rejoins the group in the days ahead. Even a return to collective training would not automatically confirm match readiness.
Mbappé is one of six players currently on individual recovery programmes at the club, alongside Raúl Asencio, Ibrahima Konaté, Ferland Mendy, Fede Valverde and Rodrygo. Madrid provided no return dates for any of them.
The Villarreal match opens a demanding October run for Madrid. They visit Roma on 14 October, host Sevilla on 18 October and RB Leipzig on 21 October, before travelling to Barcelona for the Clásico on 25 October. The depth of that schedule gives the club added incentive to manage Mbappé’s return carefully rather than rush him back before he is fully fit.
