Kylian Mbappé announced himself in La Liga this season with a hat-trick as Real Madrid defeated Real Sociedad 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday, moving the champions to two wins from two in the Spanish top flight.

Mbappé, who had gone without a goal in Madrid’s opening-day victory at Espanyol, broke his duck before half-time and added two more after the interval to put the result beyond doubt. The French forward’s treble was the centrepiece of a dominant home display that underlined Madrid’s early-season momentum.

Jude Bellingham was the architect behind much of the damage, registering two assists including the pass that set up Vinícius Jr for his first league goal of the campaign. The Brazilian’s strike added further gloss to a performance that left Sociedad — already beaten in their opener at Real Betis — with two defeats from two.

The occasion carried an additional subplot: the match marked a return to the Bernabéu for José Mourinho, whose history with the stadium stretches back to his three-year spell as Madrid head coach between 2010 and 2013.

For Mbappé, the hat-trick will provide a measure of relief after a goalless start to the new season. The 25-year-old arrived at Madrid last summer amid enormous expectation, and three goals in a single home fixture is precisely the kind of statement performance the Bernabéu faithful had been waiting for.

Madrid’s next assignment will test whether this early form is sustainable, but back-to-back wins — including a convincing margin at home — sets a firm foundation at the top of La Liga.
