Marsch insists 'I'd rather be us than them' after Canada's 3-0 World Cup exit to Morocco
Jesse Marsch drew widespread bewilderment after Canada were eliminated from the World Cup, losing 3-0 to Morocco in the Round of 16. The Canada head coach insisted he was prouder of his side's attacking approach than Morocco's clinical, more conservative display.
Jesse Marsch left pundits and fans scratching their heads after Canada were beaten 3-0 by Morocco in the World Cup Round of 16, with the head coach declaring he would “rather be us than them” despite his side’s heavy defeat.
Canada showed promise in the first half but were undone by Azzedine Ounahi, who broke the deadlock with a powerful strike in the 55th minute and added a second in the 82nd. Soufiane Rahimi completed the rout deep into stoppage time to end Canada’s tournament.
Despite the scoreline, Marsch pointed to his side’s attacking intent as a source of pride. Canada generated 0.86 xG from 10 shot attempts, marginally more than Morocco’s 0.78 xG — though the African champions converted their chances with ruthless efficiency.
“What a privilege our fans have had to root on a team like this, that goes after the game, that doesn’t play defensive, that shows they can be better,” Marsch said post-match. “Of course, we have to be in these situations more and more, and then we have to find ways to succeed, and then we have to build. But what a great team.”
It was his next remark that sparked the most debate. “I’d rather be us than them,” Marsch stated. “As good as Morocco is, I’d rather be us, right? I’m really proud of our guys. We went after the game. They’re hurting right now, but my goodness, I couldn’t be prouder.”
The comments drew visible confusion from former USMNT forwards Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan, who were analysing the match in the studio. Canada finished the game with just three shots on target.
Morocco, the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions, advance to the quarter-finals and will face the winner of France versus Paraguay.
