Marquinhos snatches victory for PSG at the Vélodrome against ten-man Marseille

PSG dominated Marseille 2-1 at the Vélodrome on Sunday, September 20, in the Classique that closed Matchday 5 of Ligue 1. Marquinhos scored the winning goal in the 74th minute, just two minutes after Marseille’s equalizer, before Weah was sent off to seal the match.

The first half produced a balanced game, with both teams creating chances without managing to convert them. It was in the second half that everything was decided, within the space of around ten minutes. Ferran Torres, brought on during the match, opened the scoring in the 66th minute. Marseille responded quickly through Angel Gomes (72nd), suggesting a share of the points. But Marquinhos restored PSG’s advantage in the 74th, before Weah’s red card in the 77th definitively ended Marseille’s hopes.

This second consecutive victory allows PSG to finish the day in sixth place, five points behind leaders Monaco. For Marseille, the situation is far more concerning: the club concedes its fifth consecutive defeat across all competitions and finds itself 17th in the standings, just three points from the top half of the table.

The evening was also marked by two further injuries on the Marseille side: Paixao and Harit both had to leave the pitch through injury, adding further to the woes for an Marseille side in great difficulty at the start of the season.
