Marc Overmars resigns as Royal Antwerp sporting director citing serious health concerns

Marc Overmars has resigned as sporting director of Royal Antwerp FC with immediate effect, citing a serious deterioration in his health that his doctors warned could have grave consequences if he continued working.

The 53-year-old former Arsenal and Ajax executive published an open letter confirming the decision, writing: “All the years of accumulated fatigue and the immense stress sadly reached a climax this past weekend. My energy is completely depleted today: if I don’t listen to my body now, my doctors predict that the chance of a bad outcome is very high. So I have to make a drastic decision and completely cease my professional activities for the time being.”

Overmars had been in the role at the Belgian club since 2022, just over four years in total. He said he intends to make one final appearance before stepping away entirely: “Before the match against Union next week, I want to thank you all in person one more time. After that, complete rest is definitely in order.”

The Dutchman built a formidable reputation in football administration after his playing career, which included winning the Premier League with Arsenal in 1998 before a move to Barcelona. He later became a central figure at Ajax, where he helped assemble the celebrated 2019 squad — featuring Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt — that reached the Champions League semi-finals.

At Antwerp, Overmars continued to demonstrate his eye for talent. He played a key role in constructing the squad that won the Belgian league and cup double in 2023. Among the players identified and developed under his watch were Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, sold for a record fee last summer, and Willian Pacho, the PSG defender who was part of their Champions League-winning side this season. Arthur Vermeeren and George Ilenikhena also moved to European clubs for notable fees during his tenure.

Overmars did not specify a timeline for his return to football, leaving open the possibility of a future role once his health allows.
