Manuel Neuer retires from international football again after Germany's World Cup penalty exit
Manuel Neuer, 40, has confirmed his second international retirement after Germany were eliminated by Paraguay on penalties at the World Cup. The Bayern Munich goalkeeper, who had been persuaded out of retirement to play the tournament, ends his international career with 128 caps.
Manuel Neuer has retired from international football for the second time after Germany were knocked out of the World Cup by Paraguay in a 4-3 penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
The 40-year-old Bayern Munich goalkeeper confirmed the decision in post-match television interviews. Asked by Sportschau whether this was truly the end, Neuer replied simply: “Yes.” He told Magenta TV: “No. It’s very bitter to end it like this.”
Neuer had originally retired from international duty after Euro 2024, insisting he would not return. Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann stepped in as Germany’s number one, playing six qualification matches and pre-tournament friendlies following injuries to Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen. Despite initial denials from both player and coach Julian Nagelsmann, speculation persisted until Nagelsmann recalled Neuer as first choice for the World Cup, demoting Baumann — a gamble that ultimately did not pay off.
Germany’s campaign ended in painful circumstances. Julio Enciso put Paraguay ahead in the first half before a Kai Havertz header levelled matters after the interval. Germany believed they had won it in extra time when Jonathan Tah headed home from a corner, only for VAR to controversially rule the goal out for a foul on the Paraguay goalkeeper.
In the shootout, Neuer saved Fabian Balbuena’s effort, but misses from Havertz, Nick Woltemade and Tah condemned Germany to an early exit at the first knockout stage.
Neuer, who made his international debut in 2009, was the last remaining member of Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning squad and finishes with 128 caps. He joined Bayern Munich from Schalke in 2011 and has since won 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies, in addition to that World Cup winner’s medal.
Despite stepping away from international football, Neuer is set to continue at club level, having signed a contract extension with Bayern Munich last month.
