Manchester United’s pursuit of Crysencio Summerville has received a boost after the West Ham winger’s World Cup campaign ended in a penalty shootout defeat to Morocco in the round of 32, freeing him to focus entirely on his club future.

The 24-year-old missed his spot-kick as the Netherlands were eliminated, and he can now turn his attention to transfer speculation that has followed him throughout the summer. West Ham value Summerville at £50 million, and he has three years remaining on his current contract — a position of strength the club have used to insist they are under no pressure to sell despite their relegation to the Championship.

Summerville had an impressive tournament, making his international debut earlier this month and going on to appear in all four of the Netherlands’ games, scoring twice and adding two assists. Those performances have only intensified interest from multiple clubs, with Paris Saint-Germain among the sides reportedly competing with United for his signature.

Much of United’s early summer business under manager Michael Carrick has focused on central midfield, with Brazilian Ederson already secured. However, Carrick is expected to strengthen across several positions ahead of the club’s return to the Champions League, and the left wing is identified as a priority area.

Summerville features on United’s shortlist of wide options for that role. Carrick deployed Patrick Dorgu in an advanced left-sided position early in his tenure before Matheus Cunha claimed the berth, though Cunha’s versatility means he can operate across the forward line, leaving room for a more natural wide player.

The future of Marcus Rashford also has a bearing on United’s thinking. The England forward impressed during a loan spell at Barcelona, but the Catalan club chose not to activate their purchase option, leaving his situation unresolved as the summer window progresses.

With Summerville’s World Cup over, United now have the opportunity to move more decisively — though West Ham’s firm £50 million valuation and competition from PSG and others mean any deal remains far from straightforward.
