Gundogan hails Maresca as 'incredible' ahead of Man City managerial reign
Ilkay Gundogan has backed Enzo Maresca to succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, describing the Italian as 'unbelievable as a human being' and predicting near-universal support inside the club.
Ilkay Gundogan has given a glowing endorsement of Enzo Maresca as the Italian prepares to take charge of Manchester City, calling him ‘incredible’ and drawing direct comparisons to outgoing manager Pep Guardiola.
Maresca has signed a three-year deal to succeed Guardiola, who guided City to an unprecedented Treble in 2022/23 — the same season the Italian served as assistant coach at the club. It is a role that left a lasting impression on those in the dressing room, including Gundogan, who captained the side that year.
“As a coach I think he has amazing qualities,” Gundogan said. “You know that he’s smart and he knows exactly what he does. As a human being he’s unbelievable, honestly. In this football world I have not met many other people like him.”
Gundogan, who spent eight years at City across two spells and became one of Guardiola’s most trusted lieutenants, suggested Maresca shares the qualities that made his predecessor so successful — both tactically and in man-management.
“Similar to Pep, he has the intelligence to do the right decisions and to do the right tactical things,” he added. “But then also the human side, to get everyone on board. I’m sure that probably 99% of the people inside the club will also be very happy.”
The appointment comes with significant pressure attached. Guardiola leaves City as arguably the greatest club manager of all time, having delivered six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups, and the 2023 Champions League during his tenure. Maresca’s most recent role was leading Leicester City to the Championship title and promotion to the Premier League.
Gundogan, who is open to a return to City in a coaching capacity once his playing career ends, acknowledged that Maresca’s approach may have evolved since his days as a No.2, but expressed confidence that the Italian has the tools to sustain the club’s golden era.
