Manchester United sell Toby Collyer to West Brom in deal worth up to £7.6m
Manchester United have agreed to sell midfielder Toby Collyer to Championship side West Brom in a deal worth an initial £3m, rising to £7.6m with add-ons, with United retaining a 40% sell-on clause.
Manchester United have agreed to sell 22-year-old midfielder Toby Collyer to West Bromwich Albion in a deal that could reach £7.6million, marking the club’s third permanent departure of the summer. United will receive an initial £3million, with a further £4.6million available in add-ons, and have secured a 40% sell-on clause.
Collyer had been widely expected to leave Old Trafford on a permanent basis this summer after spending the entirety of last season on loan. He joined West Brom for the first half of the campaign before moving to Hull City for the second half, where an ankle injury in April cut short his involvement in the Tigers’ successful play-off run. Despite making only five appearances for Hull, he attracted enough interest for a return to the MKM Stadium to be considered before West Brom ultimately won the race for his signature.
His first loan spell at the Hawthorns was a turbulent one — West Brom endured a chaotic period and Collyer struggled for regular game time — but the club have since stabilised under James Morrison and made an encouraging start to the new Championship season.
United originally signed Collyer from Brighton in 2022, and he went on to make 13 appearances for the first team, at one point finding himself ahead of Casemiro in Ruben Amorim’s midfield pecking order. He featured in pre-season this summer, but United’s £155million investment in Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba has significantly deepened Michael Carrick’s options in the engine room, making Collyer’s exit inevitable.
The sale represents a tidy piece of business for United, who recoup a fee for a player who had limited first-team prospects at Old Trafford, while Collyer joins a West Brom side with genuine Championship promotion ambitions.
