Manchester United open fan consultation on new 100,000-seat Old Trafford design
Manchester United have launched a supporter survey to shape the design of their planned 100,000-seat stadium, with focus groups also planned as Foster + Partners resumes work following the club's acquisition of adjacent land.
Manchester United have invited supporters to help shape the design of their planned new 100,000-seat stadium, launching a formal consultation process as architect Foster + Partners resumes design work after the club secured a key plot of land earlier this year.
The survey, distributed to season ticket holders, cup season ticket holders, executive club members, official members, hospitality purchasers from the past three years, and waiting-list members, covers five broad themes: creating a world-class matchday experience, heritage and legacy, atmosphere, the wider campus, and transport links to and from the ground.
Beyond the survey, United have outlined plans to convene a series of fan focus groups drawn from a range of backgrounds and experiences. The club says these sessions will test emerging ideas and ensure that supporter views are being interpreted accurately as the design evolves. Further consultation rounds are planned on topics including ticketing, affordability, and other aspects of the matchday experience.
Collette Roche, United’s CEO of the new stadium development, said the project was “one of the most significant” the club would undertake over the next century. “Above all else, this is a football stadium built for them, so getting the details right matters,” she said. “That’s why we are committed to thorough and transparent engagement, ensuring supporters help inform key decisions on atmosphere, affordability, accessibility and the traditions that have made Old Trafford so special for so long.”
Roche acknowledged that while engagement since 2024 had revealed genuine excitement among supporters, some fans would have “important questions and concerns” that the process needed to address. “By working together, we can create a world-class football stadium that supports success on the pitch, reflects the identity of Manchester United, and gives fans a home they can be proud of for generations to come,” she added.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe had praised Foster + Partners’ initial concept visuals when they were first revealed last year, though the club has been clear that design planning remains at an early stage. The land acquisition earlier in 2025 removed a significant logistical obstacle, allowing the architectural work to move forward in earnest.
