Carrick faces the media as United's winless run stretches to seven games
Michael Carrick addressed reporters at Carrington on Friday ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with Bournemouth, with his future as Manchester United head coach under intense scrutiny after just two wins in 11 games and a heavy Champions League defeat at Como.
Michael Carrick held his pre-match press conference at Carrington on Friday, five months into a tenure that has deteriorated sharply and left him facing the prospect of the sack before the season has properly taken shape.
United have won just twice in their opening 11 games and have gone seven matches without a victory in all competitions. The nadir came in the Champions League defeat at Como, after which captain Bruno Fernandes publicly criticised the team’s tactics — a moment that typically signals the end for a manager. Carrick subsequently apologised for the performance and acknowledged results had not been good enough.
Despite the mounting pressure, the club’s hierarchy opted against an immediate dismissal, with Sunday’s home fixture against Bournemouth understood to represent a must-win for the head coach. Carrick, appointed on a permanent two-year contract in May, is expected to take charge of that game.
The injury situation compounds United’s difficulties. Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo have both been absent in recent weeks, while Patrick Dorgu, Benjamin Sesko and Manuel Ugarte are also unavailable. Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford were listed as doubts ahead of the Bournemouth fixture, with Carrick expected to provide fitness updates at the briefing.
The 45-year-old guided United to a strong finish in the second half of last season, which earned him the permanent role, but he has been unable to replicate that form with the same squad this term. The disconnect between manager and players has been a recurring theme, and Fernandes’ public remarks have sharpened the sense that the dressing room’s patience is wearing thin.
Finding a replacement at short notice would present its own complications for United’s board, but the pressure on Carrick to deliver a result against Bournemouth is unambiguous.
