Manchester United loan teenager Jayce Fitzgerald to Rotherham as deadline day nears

Manchester United have confirmed that academy midfielder Jayce Fitzgerald has joined Rotherham United on a season-long loan, with the move announced as the summer transfer window approaches its close.

The 19-year-old Salford-born midfielder made 16 appearances in Premier League 2 last season as United’s Under-21 side reached the competition’s final. He also collected Under-18 Premier League and Under-18 Premier League Cup winners’ medals during his time at the club.

Fitzgerald edged into first-team contention during Ruud van Nistelrooy’s spell as interim manager, appearing as an unused substitute in three matchday squads — a 5-2 Carabao Cup win over Leicester City, a 1-1 Premier League draw with Chelsea, and a 2-0 Europa League victory over PAOK Salonika.

In a statement, United said: “Fitzgerald has previously represented our Under-18s too, having joined the club at a young age, and featured in three first-team matchday squads during the 2024/25 campaign. We wish Jayce the best of luck for this season and will be keeping a close eye on his progress.”

The move carries a familiar thread for Rotherham. Fitzgerald is the third United youngster to head to the South Yorkshire club on loan in recent seasons, following in the footsteps of Gabriele Biancheri — whose development was hampered by injury — and Dan Gore, who was named Rotherham’s player of the season after his stint there last term. Fitzgerald spoke with Gore about his experience at the club before agreeing to the deal.

There are further United connections at Rotherham. Former United youth player Alex Bruce took charge as head coach this summer, while ex-Reds assistant Steve McClaren arrived as the club’s head of football in May, giving the loan a strong sense of continuity for the teenager stepping into senior football for the first time.
