Medina admits "26 shit matches" at OM before returning as opponent
Loaned by Lens to Marseille last season, Argentine defender Facundo Medina gives a ruthless assessment of his spell at OM. He will face the Phocaean club on Thursday in the Europa League, this time wearing Bayer Leverkusen colours.
Facundo Medina did not mince words summing up his 2024-2025 season at Olympique de Marseille: “26 shit matches. I did nothing.” The 27-year-old Argentine defender will nonetheless face his former club on Thursday, when Bayer Leverkusen hosts OM in the Europa League.
The Argentine international (16 caps), loaned by RC Lens during the previous campaign, had struggled under the Marseille shirt. Injuries, particularly in the first half of the season, had prevented him from reaching the level he had displayed with the Sang et Or in previous years.
Despite this failed spell, OM’s management still exercised his purchase option. Forced to reduce their wage bill, they subsequently sold him to Bayer Leverkusen for €25 million. Since arriving in Germany, Medina has played twelve matches across all competitions.
The player approaches this confrontation with a certain eagerness. “It will be special, I’m happy. I’ll see my teammates and friends again. Honestly, I’m excited,” he said. A return to Marseille — in the opposing camp — to definitively turn the page on a season he prefers to forget.
