Paulo Fonseca could leave Olympique Lyonnais before the end of the season. According to CNN Portugal, Sporting CP has identified the Portuguese coach as its top target to succeed Rui Borges, whose position has weakened after two consecutive home defeats — against LASK Linz in European competition, then against Académico Viseu in the league. Initial contacts have reportedly already been made between Lisbon’s board, Fonseca’s representatives, and Lyon’s officials.

At 53, Fonseca knows Portuguese football well: he has previously managed Paços de Ferreira, Braga, and FC Porto before settling in France. His profile would make him a natural candidate to revive the Lions, who currently sit third in the Primeira Liga after their recent setbacks.

On Lyon’s side, the situation is more nuanced. Fonseca is under contract until next June, and Lyon cannot part with him without a bilateral agreement. The Gones occupy fifth place in Ligue 1 after a start to the season deemed convincing, which does not incline them to facilitate a mid-season departure.

A financial matter could nonetheless weigh on negotiations. Lyon still owes Sporting over €5.5 million as part of Afonso Moreira’s transfer: the Lisbon club held 20% of future resale rights on the winger, who was ultimately sold to Bayer Leverkusen for €32 million. This debt could serve as leverage in any discussions, giving Sporting a concrete argument to accelerate the matter.

Nothing is settled at this stage, and Lyon has not confirmed the existence of contacts. But if Rui Borges were to be removed from his position in Lisbon, pressure on Paulo Fonseca — and his club — would intensify.
