Carrick restores Fernandes to United XI despite calls to strip him of the captaincy
Michael Carrick has brought Bruno Fernandes back into Manchester United's starting line-up for the trip to Chelsea, just weeks after dropping him for publicly criticising the manager's tactics. Former Premier League striker Glenn Murray has urged the club to remove Fernandes as captain.
Michael Carrick has recalled Bruno Fernandes to Manchester United’s starting XI for Saturday’s match at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea, reversing the decision to drop the captain that followed a public row over tactics. The 32-year-old Portuguese midfielder had been left on the bench for last Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth after criticising Carrick’s approach in a post-match interview following United’s 4-1 Champions League loss at Como.
Carrick confirmed the pair had held clear-the-air talks before restoring Fernandes to the side, insisting the original omission was purely a football call. “He’s the captain of our football club,” Carrick said ahead of kick-off. “He cares deeply about this football club and the team and he’s desperate to do well. We’ll lead that together.”
The manager was equally firm on the question of Fernandes’s future as skipper. “It was a decision for the game. That’s it. Bruno is fully committed to this football club. I’ve got no issues with that, we move forward.”
Not everyone shares that view. Former Premier League striker Glenn Murray argued on BBC Radio 5 Live that Fernandes should be stripped of the armband, drawing a pointed comparison with the way Sir Alex Ferguson handled dissent during his tenure. “We saw back in the day, where Jaap Stam released his book, and it was 72 hours later he was out of the door,” Murray said. “There was one man in charge and that was Sir Alex Ferguson.”
Murray went further, questioning the broader power structures at Old Trafford. “Managers have less power in a football club now because of the way they have been set up. You wonder who is going to be making the decisions at Manchester United. Your manager and captain are normally pretty in sync. For me, Bruno Fernandes cannot be the captain of the football club.”
The episode has shone a light on the tensions building at United during a difficult start to the season. Carrick’s decision to restore Fernandes so quickly will be read by some as a pragmatic acknowledgement of the midfielder’s importance to the side, and by others as a signal that the manager’s authority has limits. How Fernandes performs at Stamford Bridge is likely to shape the narrative around both men in the days ahead.
