Manchester United close in on £35m Tielemans signing as Ederson pursuit fades
Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans for £35million, with the Belgian reported to favour a move to Old Trafford. The development appears to have ended United's interest in Atalanta's Ederson.
Manchester United are closing in on a £35million deal to sign Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans, with both clubs in advanced discussions and a conclusion said to be near, according to a report from The Athletic. The move appears to have effectively ended United’s pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson.
Tielemans, 29, has reportedly made clear his preference to join United over other clubs that have shown interest this summer. His current contract at Villa Park runs until 2028, meaning a successful deal would cut short a three-year spell with the Midlands club.
The push for midfield reinforcements at Old Trafford has been driven by a combination of departures and misfortune. Casemiro left the club as a free agent at the end of last season, while Manuel Ugarte suffered an injury during the World Cup, leaving United short of options in the centre of the park heading into pre-season preparations.
Tielemans joined Aston Villa in the summer of 2022 on a free transfer from Leicester City and has been a consistent presence in Unai Emery’s side, helping the club qualify for European competition. His experience in both the Premier League and at the highest level of European football makes him an attractive option for United as they look to rebuild their midfield.
With the Ederson route now appearing closed off, United’s focus has narrowed onto completing the Tielemans deal, which sources suggest is the priority signing in the middle of the park this window.
