Manchester United are considering dismissing manager Michael Carrick after a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth left the club 16th in the Premier League and eight games without a win across all competitions — but appointing their preferred replacement could come at a steep financial cost.

Eddie Howe has emerged as the frontrunner to take charge at Old Trafford, with director of football Jason Wilcox understood to be pushing strongly for his appointment. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is also said to back Howe ahead of other candidates including Julian Nagelsmann, Antonio Conte, and Fabian Hurzeler, and is reportedly keen to install an English manager.

However, securing Howe will not be straightforward. According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle United would be entitled to compensation should Howe return to management before his St James’ Park contract expires. Howe was earning approximately £6 million per year and signed a multi-year deal in the summer of 2024, meaning any settlement could run to several million pounds.

The situation is further complicated by the departure of Howe’s backroom staff — including Jason Tindall, Stephen Purches, and Simon Weatherstone — who left Newcastle alongside him, with suggestions they could reunite at a new club. That arrangement may factor into any compensation calculation Newcastle pursue.

The potential outlay would compound the financial damage United have already absorbed from recent managerial upheaval. The club paid a net severance bill of £8.2 million following the early exit of Ruben Amorim and his coaching staff, highlighting the mounting cost of repeated management changes at Old Trafford.

Not everyone within the club’s hierarchy is aligned on Howe. United’s head of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, is said to favour Nagelsmann, who has been available since stepping down as Germany manager in the summer. Ratcliffe, though, is expected to hold the final say on any appointment.

United’s next Premier League fixture is against Chelsea, and a decision on Carrick’s future is expected before that match.
