A transfer abroad would net United around £300,000, a fraction of what a domestic move could command. The contrast is stark: Liverpool paid at least £2.8 million to Chelsea for then-16-year-old Rio Ngumoha two years ago, illustrating the premium that moves within the English pyramid can attract.

The situation escalated this week when Gabriel refused to train, effectively ruling him out of contention for the Carabao Cup third-round tie against Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday — a match for which he had been in line to feature.
