Man City's £81m Bouaddi deal inadvertently blocks Newcastle's pursuit of Fernandez-Pardo

Manchester City’s £81 million purchase of teenage midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille has had an unintended consequence: it has effectively priced Newcastle United out of a deal for Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo, according to reports from the continent.

Newcastle had been in negotiations with the Ligue 1 club over a fee for the Belgian international, with the Magpies’ position strengthened by Lille’s need to balance their books — a pressure common across much of French football. That leverage has now disappeared.

The windfall from Man City’s Bouaddi deal has replenished Lille’s coffers, removing any financial urgency to sell. With their balance sheet transformed, Lille have hardened their stance in talks, holding out for an asking price that Newcastle are reportedly unwilling to meet in what they regard as an inflated market. The Magpies have consequently reached a roadblock in negotiations.

The development is a notable setback for Newcastle’s summer recruitment plans, though the club’s business with Manchester City continues on a separate front. Newcastle are finalising a reported £50 million transfer for City midfielder Nico Gonzalez, a signing that would bolster head coach Matthias Jaissle’s options in central midfield.

The Fernandez-Pardo situation illustrates how a high-profile deal between two other clubs can reshape the transfer market for third parties. Lille’s improved financial position means they can afford to wait for their valuation to be met, leaving Newcastle to weigh whether to increase their offer or redirect their attention elsewhere before the window closes.
