Manchester City are awaiting the outcome of their appeal against a guilty verdict on 114 counts of breaching Premier League financial rules, with a new independent panel convened to hear the case after the original three-person tribunal delivered its findings.

The original panel concluded that City had artificially inflated their revenue by approximately £900 million through what it described as sham sponsorship arrangements carried out between 2009 and 2018. The verdict represents one of the most significant disciplinary findings in English football history.

Should the appeal fail and the verdict is upheld, City could face a range of severe sanctions. A substantial points deduction, the stripping of league titles won during the relevant period, and even expulsion from the Premier League have all been cited as possible outcomes. Debate over the appropriate level of punishment has intensified since the original verdict was announced.

The Independent Football Regulator (IFR) could also intervene, with the power to compel the club’s owners to sell the club if it determines that is warranted.

Commentators and former figures in the game have weighed in on what punishment would be proportionate, with some backing the most severe available options given the scale and duration of the alleged misconduct. A sacked manager connected to the case has also spoken publicly, adding further attention to proceedings.

The appeal process is ongoing, and no timeline has been confirmed for when a final decision is expected from the new independent panel.
