Six defeats in eight matches: OM's crisis turns to despair for Genesio
Beaten 1-0 by Olympiakos at the Vélodrome in the Europa League on Thursday, Marseille suffered their sixth defeat in eight matches across all competitions. The situation becomes critical ahead of their trip to Angers on Sunday.
Olympique de Marseille collapsed once again at the Vélodrome on Thursday evening, losing 1-0 to Olympiakos in the Europa League. A goal conceded just before half-time was enough for the Greeks to leave with all three points, inflicting on OM a sixth defeat in just eight matches since the start of the season.
The timing is particularly cruel. Three days earlier, the Phocaeans had seemed to catch their breath by winning away at Troyes (0-2) in Ligue 1. This laborious victory ultimately only served to briefly mask an alarming reality: Marseille is in crisis, and Bruno Genesio bears the visible weight of it. The manager appeared dejected at his press conference, with no obvious answer to the negative spiral engulfing his team.
The situation did not escape Daniel Riolo, despite being rarely sparing with criticism of OM. The RMC consultant this time refrained from attacking the Marseille manager, preferring to express a form of weary resignation. “I’m moving from criticism to pity. They’re making me feel sorry for them actually. I don’t even know what to say anymore, it’s so desperate,” he said. “When you scrape by against Troyes, when you lose in European competition against Olympiakos who aren’t a European powerhouse… Genesio, I don’t know what he’s going to be able to say. That’s why it’s turning into pity, I’m starting to feel sorry. “
On the players’ side, Timoty Weah attempted to maintain a combative tone in the mixed zone. “We’re disappointed because we wanted to win. We’re aiming for the top of the table, even in difficulty. We defended well, we were compact. The problem is we failed to score. But we have to keep going, stay positive. The wins will come,” the American international assured.
Marseille will have little time to dwell: they travel to Angers as early as Sunday for matchday 7 of Ligue 1. A match that Genesio and his players can no longer afford to lose.
