Makhachev targets Prates at UFC 336 in Toronto for second welterweight title defence
Islam Makhachev's second welterweight title defence is reportedly being lined up against Carlos Prates at UFC 336 on 30 January 2027 in Toronto, according to reporter Alvaro Colmenero.
Islam Makhachev’s second welterweight title defence is being targeted for UFC 336 on 30 January 2027 in Toronto, with Carlos Prates emerging as the leading contender, according to reporter Alvaro Colmenero.
Colmenero reported the development on X, writing: “Prates can train hard now because, if the negotiations continue on their course, we’ll see the Brazilian fighting against Islam Makhachev next January 30 at #UFC336 in Toronto.”
Makhachev (29-1) spent years as lightweight champion, making four successful defences at 155 pounds before moving up to welterweight. He claimed the 170-pound title by defeating Jack Della Maddalena by unanimous decision in November 2025, then made his first defence against Ian Garry in August.
Prates (24-7) has built a compelling case as the division’s most dangerous finisher, having stopped all seven of his UFC opponents. His only promotional defeat came by decision against Garry — the same man Makhachev has since beaten. “The Nightmare” arrives on the back of a third-round stoppage of Della Maddalena in May, adding a layer of symmetry to the potential matchup given Makhachev’s own history with the Australian.
Negotiations are described as ongoing, and no official announcement has been made by the UFC.
