Tim Kennedy, a retired UFC middleweight and former U.S. Army Green Beret, is receiving treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center after suffering three gunshot wounds in a September 17 ambush in the Democratic Republic of Congo that left around 20 people dead or wounded.
Tim Kennedy, the retired UFC and Strikeforce middleweight and former U.S. Army Green Beret, is back in the United States and receiving treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, after being shot three times during an ambush in the Democratic Republic of Congo on September 17.
Kennedy was working for private security firm Vectus Global when the attack occurred in South Kivu province, according to Reuters. The ambush left approximately 20 people dead or wounded.
U.S. Representative Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin, himself a Navy SEAL veteran, confirmed he had spoken with Kennedy and called for prayers for his recovery. “I just spoke to my dear friend [Tim Kennedy],” Van Orden wrote on X. “That means he is not dead and that means I am thankful. I am asking everyone to pray for his healing and that his wonderful family finds peace.”
Kennedy built a respected combat sports career across Strikeforce and the UFC, recording notable victories over Melvin Manhoef, Robbie Lawler, and Michael Bisping. He announced his retirement from MMA in January 2017, shortly after a loss to Kelvin Gastelum.
