Silva and Wang Cong clash at staredown as UFC 332 vacant flyweight title looms
Natalia Silva and Wang Cong faced off intensely at the UFC 332 pre-fight press conference on Thursday, with Wang publicly calling out Silva for not doing enough to promote their flyweight title fight. The pair meet Saturday for the belt vacated by injured champion Valentina Shevchenko.
Natalia Silva and Wang Cong delivered a charged staredown at the UFC 332 pre-fight press conference on Thursday, setting the stage for Saturday’s vacant women’s flyweight title fight — a bout that only came about after champion Valentina Shevchenko was forced to relinquish the belt through injury.
The tension at the press conference was not limited to the faceoff itself. Wang Cong took the unusual step of publicly criticising Silva for failing to help generate buzz around their main event, going as far as writing her opponent a note in an attempt to coordinate a more theatrical buildup to the ceremonial weigh-ins.
“I had my plan — let’s heat up the faceoff for the [ceremonial weigh-ins] — but she didn’t take a look at it,” Wang said. “We need to bring the money to the show. We need make people hyped. She should do that.”
Silva was unmoved by the criticism, making clear that promotional theatrics are not her concern heading into the biggest fight of her career.
“If she wants to get cute, she can get cute by herself,” Silva said. “It doesn’t matter. I’m not here to play. This is my dream, I’m here to fight. I’m here to enjoy it.”
The contrasting approaches reflect two fighters with different philosophies about what it takes to succeed at the top level. Wang, who has cultivated a more outspoken public presence, appears eager to maximise the event’s profile. Silva, meanwhile, is channelling her energy entirely into the contest itself.
With Shevchenko sidelined, the flyweight division’s throne is genuinely up for grabs. Whoever wins on Saturday will inherit one of the UFC’s most prestigious titles and step into the spotlight that Shevchenko occupied for years. For both Silva and Wang Cong, the stakes could hardly be higher.
