Maddison ends 526-day wait with dream goal as Tottenham climb off Premier League bottom
James Maddison scored on his first start in 526 days as Tottenham beat Coventry 3-1 at home to record their first Premier League win of the season. Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies also scored, while Dejan Kulusevski made his own comeback after 17 months out.
James Maddison marked his return from 526 days on the sidelines with a stunning opening goal as Tottenham beat Coventry 3-1 at home on Saturday, lifting Spurs off the bottom of the Premier League table with their first league victory of the campaign.
Maddison, who had suffered back-to-back knee injuries including an anterior cruciate ligament tear, fired a first-time effort over goalkeeper Carl Rushworth in the 14th minute and celebrated with his trademark darts pose. It was his first goal since a 3-1 win over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League semi-finals at the end of the 2024-25 season.
“They’re the ones you dream of,” Maddison said after the match. “Without going too deep into it, them dark days last year, recovering from the ACL, you dream of them moments, them goals — and that is the light at the end of the tunnel. That is why I was a bit emotional.”
Coventry levelled through Jack Rudoni just four minutes into the second half to set up a frantic spell, but Omar Marmoush restored Tottenham’s lead on 58 minutes. The afternoon brought further injury concerns for Roberto De Zerbi’s side, with Tosin Adarabioyo, Andy Robertson, and Marmoush all forced off, but it also provided another comeback story: Dejan Kulusevski entered the pitch after 17 months of his own injury troubles to a special ovation from the home crowd.
Ben Davies sealed the three points shortly after Kulusevski’s introduction, his scuffed effort beating Rushworth to end Spurs’ wait for a first league win.
Maddison said he had spoken to De Zerbi during the week about returning to the starting XI. “I just wanted to play well, show my quality and show what the team’s missed in the last 18 months,” he said. “The gaffer asked me to play and said he wanted to enjoy watching me from the side — so hopefully I did that.”
He also paid tribute to Kulusevski’s return: “I felt really proud of Dejan because him coming back… I knew exactly that feeling of him stepping onto the pitch after that time out. Those moments and goals make it all worth it.”
Coventry manager Frank Lampard was left frustrated despite a competitive display from his side. “A really good display. 3-1 changes the view at the end of the game, but I thought at 2-1 we were really pushing,” Lampard said.
