Carrick given two-game ultimatum as United target defensive reinforcements in January
Gary Neville has warned Michael Carrick that Manchester United must climb out of mid-table by January or his position will come under serious threat, with the club sitting 13th after seven Premier League games. United are also prioritising centre-back and left-back signings in the winter window.
Michael Carrick faces a defining fortnight at Manchester United, with Gary Neville warning that the manager cannot afford to still be sitting in mid-table when the January transfer window opens. United are currently 13th in the Premier League after seven matches, closer to the relegation zone than to the top four.
Neville, speaking publicly on the matter, said fifth place — widely considered sufficient for Champions League qualification — is the minimum benchmark Carrick must target to justify continued investment in his tenure. “If they’re 13th in January, he’s got a problem because then you are what you are,” Neville said. “Whereas I think it’s still early enough, seven points from seven games, to say, ‘Okay, still early in the season.’ You can’t say that after 15 games.”
Neville identified the Premier League trips to Bournemouth and Chelsea as the fixtures that will do most to shape perceptions of Carrick’s management. “It has to change in the next few weeks: Bournemouth is really important and Chelsea away. And how he manages the games in between that.”
Carrick described Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds as a “fresh start” despite the result extending United’s winless run to six matches across all competitions. The performance offered some encouragement ahead of a punishing schedule that includes a Champions League away fixture against Como, followed by Premier League clashes with Bournemouth, Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Liverpool.
Off the pitch, the club is dealing with the fallout from Lisandro Martinez’s public criticism of director of football Jason Wilcox over the summer’s recruitment process. The Argentine defender subsequently issued an apology and returned to the starting line-up at Elland Road, but the episode has sharpened scrutiny on United’s plans for the January window.
According to reports, United are prioritising centre-backs and left-backs as their primary targets, having focused on midfield in the summer and attacking reinforcements the previous year. The club failed to secure a replacement for Luke Shaw during the summer — having targeted Newcastle’s Lewis Hall before the full-back signed a new contract at St James’ Park — and a left-back remains high on their wishlist. The search for defensive cover is also expected to put pressure on the futures of several experienced players already in the squad.
