Alexander-Arnold rebuffed Ferguson with one-liner before leaving Liverpool for Real Madrid
Trent Alexander-Arnold once told Sir Alex Ferguson his mother's reason for not joining Manchester United as a youngster, despite having a family connection to Old Trafford through his uncle, a former club secretary at the club.
Trent Alexander-Arnold once shut down Sir Alex Ferguson’s interest in him with a single, deadpan line — and it had nothing to do with football. The right-back, who left Liverpool for Real Madrid in 2025 after 354 appearances for his boyhood club, had a genuine family link to Manchester United through his uncle John Alexander, who served as a club secretary at Old Trafford.
When Ferguson questioned the young Alexander-Arnold about why he had never tried to sign for United, the response was characteristically blunt: “My mum doesn’t drive on motorways.” The anecdote, recounted to the Mirror in 2018, captures the simplicity of a decision that kept one of English football’s most gifted full-backs firmly on Merseyside from the age of six.
Alexander-Arnold went on to become central to Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool, his exceptional range of passing helping the club win the Premier League and the Champions League. He made his first league start against United as a teenager and never looked back, accumulating honours that cemented his place among the best in his position.
His departure to Real Madrid, as his contract wound down in 2025, provoked a strong reaction from Liverpool supporters. Alexander-Arnold had secured a second Premier League title before making the move, and was candid about the weight of the decision.
“It was one of the toughest decisions of my life,” he said last September. “Liverpool is my home; it made me who I am. But Madrid felt like the right step, at the right time. It is definitely a challenge, but it’s a challenge I welcome.”
“The Bernabeu is a sacred place. You feel the weight of the jersey, but that very thing pushes you to give it your all. Yes, I feel it’s a personal transformation as well as a professional one. Moving to a new country, learning a new culture, pushes you as a person.”
The transition has not been seamless. Alexander-Arnold made 30 appearances for Real across all competitions last season but managed only 14 league starts, hampered by injuries. Under new manager José Mourinho this campaign, he has found himself in a squad rotation role, with summer signing Denzel Dumfries providing competition for his position.
