Lizarazu crowns Upamecano as France's new defensive leader without Mbappé

Dayot Upamecano established himself as the leader of the French defence during the Blues’ victory in Turkey (1-0), Friday evening in the UEFA Nations League. A performance that convinced Bixente Lizarazu, 1998 World Cup winner, to designate the Bayern Munich centre-back as the true rock of the tricolour back line.

“For me, it was the best,” said the former left-back decisively. Lizarazu was particularly struck by the way Upamecano neutralised Turkish striker Burak Yilmaz: “He was impressive during the World Cup, he was monstrous in that match with a very physical duel against Yilmaz, who was rough and who every time ran into a wall.”

What impressed the former international most is the clarity with which the 27-year-old defender wins his duels. “Often, when you go into a duel, it’s a bit approximate. But him, he destroys everything. That’s what is very impressive, his athletic power. You can feel he is at the top of his career, his form and his confidence,” he elaborated.

This defensive solidity takes on particular significance as France prepares for the trip to Belgium on Monday evening. Kylian Mbappé, who scored against Turkey but was withdrawn with a left knee injury, will be absent for this clash against the Red Devils. The French team will therefore have to rely on other leaders, and Upamecano seems perfectly positioned to take on this role in central defence.
