Isak returns early from Sweden duty with minor toe injury after scoring in 2-1 win

Alexander Isak has returned early from international duty after Liverpool confirmed the striker sustained a minor injury during Sweden’s 2-1 UEFA Nations League victory over Romania.

Isak scored in the win managed by Graham Potter but was forced off with a bloodied toe following what he described as a heavy stamp. Despite playing down the issue in post-match comments, Liverpool announced he will miss Sweden’s three remaining fixtures in the current international break.

“It was a real stamp,” Isak told reporters after the game. “Those of you who have played might know that it takes a few minutes before it lets go, but it was okay.”

Liverpool’s official statement confirmed the extent of the precaution: “Alexander Isak is to return to Liverpool from international duty due to a minor injury. The striker will not be involved in Sweden’s three remaining fixtures in the current international break and will now be assessed by club medical staff at the AXA Training Centre.”

The news will concern Liverpool given Isak’s sharp form at the start of the 2026-27 Premier League season. The 27-year-old has scored four league goals in five games — already surpassing his entire tally from a difficult debut campaign at Anfield.

Manager Andoni Iraola has been encouraged by the upturn but wants more from his striker beyond goalscoring. Speaking after Isak netted the winner against Bournemouth before the international break, Iraola said: “He took the chance after a quiet afternoon — and that’s what a striker’s job is like. He had a couple of situations, a cross he didn’t hit properly, one when his control wasn’t right and then the goal.”

“But he has to help us to be closer to the box, to play in the opposition half and to have meaningful possession. Then, if the team is playing there, he will receive the rewards in terms of goals. We need that level so that we can play better.”

The severity of the toe injury will be determined once Isak reports back to the AXA Training Centre, with Liverpool likely to monitor his fitness ahead of their next Premier League fixture.
