Fernandes ruled out of Portugal's Norway trip as injury forces Jesus to rotate

Bruno Fernandes will not feature for Portugal against Norway in Oslo on Sunday after being left out of the official matchday squad, with manager Jorge Jesus revealing the Manchester United captain has been managing a persistent injury that hampered him during the win over Wales in Lisbon.

Fernandes came off in the final minutes of that victory, and Jesus subsequently confirmed the 29-year-old had been playing through pain for United across his last three Premier League matches. His absence from training on Saturday preceded the formal omission from UEFA’s published squad lists, which cap matchday selections at 23 players. Gonçalo Inácio was drafted in as a replacement.

Jesus was candid about the decision to protect Fernandes ahead of Thursday’s Nations League fixture against Denmark. “He’s coming off an injury at United, and he told me he’s been playing with that pain for the last three games, which is hindering him,” the Portugal boss said. “It was one of the factors that prevented Bruno from playing at his best against Wales. I’ve already spoken to him and I prefer not to risk it in this game so he’s fully fit for the Denmark match.”

Jesus also noted that Nuno Mendes, the other player flagged by Portugal’s medical staff, could be available for the Norway game, making Fernandes the more serious of the two concerns.

The timing adds to a difficult recent run for Fernandes at club level. After scoring a hat-trick against Ipswich at the end of August, he has gone three Premier League matches without a goal or assist, playing 90 minutes in both the draw with Manchester City and the defeat to Fulham in the week before the international break.

United manager Michael Carrick has already signalled an intention to manage Fernandes’s workload carefully as the season intensifies, with Champions League fixtures adding to the schedule. “Bruno’s part of that. He’s a big player for us, he’s obviously our captain, but there’s still elements where we need to look after him,” Carrick said.
