Liam Gallagher vows Man City will 'clear their name' after guilty verdict on 114 charges

Liam Gallagher has defiantly backed Manchester City after the club was found guilty of 114 of the 115 Premier League financial rule breaches it faced, vowing on social media that City will win their appeal and pursue legal action against those he accused of trying to “destroy” the club.

The Oasis frontman took to X on Friday as news broke of the verdict — the result of charges first laid in February 2023 — and continued posting into Saturday morning. Responding to a fan who suggested City supporters might “give up” on their club, Gallagher wrote: “Don’t be RIDICULOUS we’re gonna win this appeal clear our good name and then sue all those little SPUNKBUBBLES who have tried to destroy us.”

His brother Noel Gallagher also spoke out, describing himself as “shocked and saddened” by the outcome. Appearing on the City podcast Let Me Talk, Noel said he felt “quite sad” for the fans and the players. “The club have assured us all along that they vehemently denied any of these charges,” he said. “So it was a bit of a shock to find out that we’ve been found guilty of all but one.”

Asked whether the verdict changes the significance of moments such as Sergio Agüero’s title-winning goal in 2012, Noel was unequivocal. “Our focus as fans is always on the pitch and we know what we saw — they won it on the pitch,” he said. “Whatever goes on in the boardroom, it’s nothing to do with the supporters or the players.”

Manchester City now await a punishment ruling, which legal and football governance experts have described as potentially significant and far-reaching. The club has indicated it intends to appeal the findings.

In a statement, a City spokesperson said the Premier League process “remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed.” The club has consistently maintained throughout the lengthy proceedings that it did not breach financial rules.
