Liverpool's approach for Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr rebuffed as Barcola pursuit continues

Liverpool have seen an opening approach for Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr rejected, The Athletic reports, leaving the club with fewer than seven days to strengthen their attack before the summer transfer window closes.

The Senegal international, 28, was placed on a Liverpool shortlist as far back as the summer of 2020 during his time at Watford, and the Reds appear to have revived that interest under new head coach Andoni Iraola. However, Palace are understood to be reluctant sellers, with only an exceptional offer likely to change their position.

Sarr’s name emerged after Liverpool’s short-lived interest in Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh faded. The club’s primary target remains Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola, with negotiations between the two clubs having been ongoing for several weeks. The 23-year-old left-winger has not previously played outside of France, and a move to Anfield would represent his first venture abroad.

Former France international Louis Saha has backed Barcola to thrive in the Premier League. “Bradley Barcola would be a top level signing,” Saha said. “He’s quick, he can provide assists to other players and score goals as well, so it’s easy to see why Arsenal and Liverpool are taking a look at him.” Saha also pointed to the versatility of former Liverpool forwards Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah when addressing whether Barcola could operate on the right flank.

Iraola’s reign began last Sunday with a 2-2 draw at Newcastle United’s St James’ Park, in which all three of the club’s summer arrivals featured. Jeremy Jacquet started, while Ronald Araujo and Victor Munoz came off the bench — each contributing positively — but the performance highlighted a clear need for reinforcement in midfield and attack.

With deadline day approaching, Liverpool’s ability to land either Barcola or Sarr — or both — will define the shape of Iraola’s first squad at Anfield.
