Lewis family pumps another £120m into Tottenham as winless start deepens concern

The Lewis family have provided Tottenham Hotspur with a further £120m capital injection, taking their total investment in the club over the past 12 months to approximately £320m — a financial commitment that arrives against a backdrop of a deeply troubled start to the Premier League season.

The latest funds follow a £100m injection earlier this summer and come via Enic, the vehicle through which the Lewis family hold their majority stake in the north London club. Their influence over key decisions at Spurs has grown since Daniel Levy stepped down as executive chairman last September.

The summer investment raised the Lewis family’s shareholding to roughly 88 per cent after Levy declined to contribute proportionally to prevent dilution of his stake, which fell from 29.88 per cent to around 27 per cent. It is not yet clear whether Levy will participate in this latest round, which could reduce his holding further to approximately 25 per cent.

The capital arrives after Tottenham spent more than £300m during the summer transfer window, breaking their transfer record twice in the process. Mateus Fernandes joined from West Ham for £85m before Sandro Tonali was prised away from Newcastle for £100m. Spurs also added Savio and Omar Marmoush from Manchester City — the latter on an initial loan — alongside defender Jan Paul van Hecke for over £50m. Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Tosin Adarabioyo, goalkeeper Martin Dubravka and Mykhailo Mudryk completed a sweeping overhaul of the squad.

Yet the heavy outlay has produced no visible dividend on the pitch. Tottenham have failed to score in any of their opening four Premier League matches, taking just two points from goalless draws against Nottingham Forest and Everton after defeats to Brentford and Newcastle. That run extends a pattern of underperformance that has seen the club finish 17th in each of the past two seasons.

Their week worsened on Tuesday when Liverpool eliminated them from the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 win at Anfield. Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo put the hosts two goals clear before Conor Gallagher pulled one back for Spurs, only for Dominik Szoboszlai to settle the tie with a stoppage-time strike.

Tottenham return to Premier League action on Saturday when they host Aston Villa, with the pressure on Ange Postecoglou’s side to finally register both a win and a goal.
