RC Lens have ended Dino Toppmöller’s tenure on Tuesday, barely four matchdays into the Ligue 1 season. The German leaves the northern club with a record of one win, two defeats and a draw (2-2 against Mans).

The news, revealed by L’Équipe, confirms that Toppmöller will not be on the bench for the trip to Monaco on Friday evening, counting towards the fifth matchday of the championship. The decision is surprising given the stability the coaching position has enjoyed at Lens in recent years, despite the budget constraints weighing on the club.

The precise reasons that led Lens’s management to make such an early decision in the season have not been officially explained. From a sporting perspective, the context did not seem alarming: Lens sit in tenth place with four points, three fewer than Strasbourg in sixth. A clash of methods in squad management is reportedly being discussed behind the scenes.

According to L’Équipe, it is Yannick Cahuzac who should inherit the position. The former midfielder, Toppmöller’s assistant since the start of the season, is set to be promoted to head coach and will lead the team at the Stade Louis-II. The possibility of him stepping into this role was already circulating within the club’s entourage. It remains to be seen whether this appointment will be permanent or simply interim pending external recruitment.
