Postecoglou defends Ronaldo after journalist claims he 'did nothing' in Al-Nassr defeat

Ange Postecoglou publicly defended Cristiano Ronaldo at a post-match press conference after Al-Nassr’s 4-0 defeat to UAE side Al Ain in the Asian Champions League, angrily dismissing a Saudi journalist’s claim that the 41-year-old had been a passenger in recent games.

The reporter stopped short of calling Ronaldo a burden — acknowledging his stature and history — but argued that his presence was not benefiting the team. Postecoglou was visibly taken aback. “Cristiano has scored three goals already, and he had limited preparation,” the Australian replied. “You shouldn’t say that about somebody who is still setting an example for everyone. You should be careful when you say things like that about people who have built a career by making all the sacrifices required to keep playing.”

When the journalist pressed further, stating “In the last three matches, he did nothing,” Postecoglou shot back: “He did nothing? You’re watching a different game to me.”

The manager was also quick to redirect blame away from his squad entirely. “This is not about the players. The players are giving everything. They are top players and they have great character. The responsibility is mine, okay? You can criticise me. No problem.”

Postecoglou took charge of Al-Nassr in the summer, but the club’s early-season form has been inconsistent. They currently sit third in the Saudi Pro League table, and the heavy midweek loss to Al Ain has added pressure on the former Tottenham and Celtic boss.

Ronaldo, who joined Al-Nassr following his acrimonious departure from Manchester United in late 2022, has scored 132 goals for the club and was part of the squad that won the Saudi Pro League title last season under Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus. Al-Nassr’s next league fixture, against Diriyah, comes after the international break.

Ronaldo will meanwhile be hoping for game time with Portugal, whose national team is now managed by his former Al-Nassr coach Jesus. Jesus is expected to name his first squad this week ahead of Portugal’s Nations League fixtures against Wales, Denmark, and two matches against Norway.
