Bayern Munich first in line for Wirtz if Liverpool sell their £116m midfielder

Bayern Munich have no active pursuit of Florian Wirtz underway, but the Bundesliga champions would be the first club at the table if Liverpool ever decided to sell their £116.5 million midfielder, according to a report from journalist Christian Falk.

Rumours had circulated in recent weeks that Bayern — who Liverpool beat to Wirtz’s signature last summer — were preparing a concrete offer for the 21-year-old. Falk moved to dismiss those claims, stating that Vincent Kompany is content with his current squad and that no approach is being planned.

“Of course, if Florian Wirtz were, at some point in future, interested in making a return to the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich would be the first team he’d talk to,” Falk said. “However, there is nothing planned. Bayern have a big squad and everyone’s feeling really confident.”

Falk also pointed to the depth Kompany already has in attacking areas, noting that Jamal Musiala is tied to a long contract and that Michael Olise is being deployed as the central fulcrum of the system — the same role he occupies for the French national team. “So, Bayern have a lot of options,” Falk added.

The reporter was equally clear that Liverpool’s enormous outlay makes a near-term sale implausible. “Don’t forget, either, that it was a lot of money Liverpool paid for Wirtz,” he said — a point that underlines why the Reds would be reluctant to absorb a significant financial loss so early into his contract.

Wirtz’s debut season at Anfield has been a difficult one by any measure. Across 54 appearances he has managed just nine Premier League contributions, a return that falls well short of the standard expected of a player who arrived as one of the most expensive signings in the club’s history. The German has struggled to impose himself consistently in the Premier League, and questions about his adaptation to English football have persisted throughout the campaign.

Despite those concerns, all indications point to Wirtz remaining at Liverpool for the foreseeable future. The club have shown no desire to move him on, and the financial reality of selling so soon after a record investment would make any exit deeply costly. For now, Bayern Munich’s interest stays firmly in the background — real, but dormant.
