Leeds bid £20m for Shea Charles as United face midfield transfer battle on multiple fronts
Manchester United are targeting Southampton's Shea Charles to bolster their midfield ahead of a Champions League return, but Leeds have tabled a £20m bid for the 22-year-old, complicating United's plans as they also chase Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
Manchester United’s summer midfield rebuild is already running into competition, with Leeds United tabling a £20 million bid for Southampton’s Shea Charles — a player United had identified as a target last month.
Charles, 22, is valued at around £25 million by Southampton, and while Leeds’ opening offer falls short of that figure, discussions are said to be ongoing. The defensive midfielder joined Southampton from Manchester City in 2023 — a deal facilitated by United’s current chief Jason Wilcox during his time at St Mary’s — and has since made 76 appearances for the club, including a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday. He missed out on Premier League promotion with Southampton following the fallout from the Spygate scandal.
United appear close to completing a separate deal for Atalanta’s Ederson, with the Old Trafford hierarchy reportedly agreeing a £35 million fee with the Serie A club, plus up to £3.8 million in add-ons. The Brazilian’s arrival would represent a significant addition for manager Michael Carrick, but United are understood to want further reinforcements in the engine room.
The competition does not stop with Leeds. United have also been linked with Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, and face rival interest from Manchester City and Tottenham across that group. City and Spurs have both been connected to Anderson and Tonali, while Spurs have also been linked with Fernandes.
Midfield has become United’s primary area of focus after a busy summer overhaul of their forward line, which brought Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to the club. Attention has since shifted to the centre of the pitch, where Carrick is working with a limited pool. Casemiro is set to join Inter Miami, Manuel Ugarte is expected to leave after failing to establish himself, and Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes currently stand as United’s main central options ahead of Ederson’s anticipated arrival.
Charles is capable of operating in central defence as well as midfield, adding versatility to his profile. Whether United can fend off Leeds — and potentially others — to secure him remains to be seen as the summer window intensifies.
