Ezequiel Lavezzi has broken his silence on the serious health difficulties affecting him since the end of his professional career. The former Argentine striker, 41, appeared to be suffering severe tremors in his arms and legs during a television interview, sparking a wave of concern and support within the football community.

Facing former Italian international Luca Toni, the “Pocho” described frankly the state into which stopping football had plunged him. “I suffered from depression, I was hospitalized, I take medication and I am undergoing treatment,” he confided. “I am recovering little by little. When I stopped playing, there was a void, and nothing to fill it.”

The trajectory of the former Paris Saint-Germain and Hebei FC player proved particularly grueling in recent years. In late 2023, he had been rushed to hospital in Uruguay following injuries to his abdomen and collarbone that occurred under unclear circumstances. In early 2024, psychological problems had led him to enter a specialized mental health facility in Buenos Aires.

Amidst these ordeals, the birth of his second son, Vittorio, in 2024, proved a decisive turning point. “The arrival of my son changed my life, it fills me with joy and makes me feel alive, it gave me the strength to continue,” explained the 2014 World Cup finalist with Argentina.

When asked by media outlet ElCanciller, Lavezzi preferred to look ahead with sobriety: “I simply hope to be happy with my family and see my son grow up.”
