Donnarumma's stoppage-time save seals controversial Manchester derby win for 10-man City

Gianluigi Donnarumma produced a crucial stoppage-time save to secure a controversial 1-0 Manchester derby victory for Manchester City over United at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Erling Haaland scoring the decisive goal despite playing the majority of the match with 10 men.

Phil Foden was sent off after just 23 minutes following a reaction to an apparent kick from United captain Bruno Fernandes, leaving City to defend for the bulk of the contest. Yet it was Haaland who broke the deadlock in the 60th minute, adjusting smartly to drive a deflected Josko Gvardiol cross into the roof of the net. The goal was awarded only after an extended VAR review, despite Enzo Fernandez appearing to be in an offside position — a decision refereeing body Pro Ref subsequently conceded was an “error of judgement”.

The strike was Haaland’s ninth Premier League goal in Manchester derby fixtures, moving him past the records previously held by Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney. It was also his sixth goal across his last four appearances for City.

United, buoyed by their numerical advantage, pressed for an equaliser and came close through efforts from Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo, both of whom struck the post. Deep into added time, Fernandes found Mbeumo in space in front of goal, only for Donnarumma to divert the shot away and seal the three points.

Haaland was effusive in his praise for the Italian goalkeeper afterwards. “Everyone just fights like never before and it’s amazing to see,” he said. “Gigio managed to save us in the 95th minute — he’s a monster.”

Haaland was equally measured when reflecting on his own finish, which came from an off-balance position after the ball deflected off Patrick Dorgu. “It’s just pure instinct, of what I feel is the right thing to do,” he said. “It’s just about trying to get the ball in the back of the net and shooting good enough so the keeper cannot save it.”

Asked about his personal targets for the season, the 26-year-old Norway striker remained focused on collective contribution. “I’m still 26, I can still develop parts of my game,” he said. “I have to be the decisive player so it’s about delivering what I can do for Manchester City — that’s my main goal.”
