Kylian Mbappé on Ethan's International Future: «A Choice That Must Come From Within»

Kylian Mbappé declined to weigh in on his brother Ethan’s international future, describing the choice of national team as a “deeply personal” and “profound” matter, in an interview with RFI.

Ethan Mbappé, 19, an attacking midfielder at Lille, was born and trained in France but holds Algerian heritage through his mother and Cameroonian heritage through his father. He is therefore eligible to represent one of these three nations at international level. He was recently called up to France’s youth team by Gérald Baticle, but has not yet played an official match for the senior French national team, which means, under FIFA regulations, all his options remain open.

“This is a profound matter, a choice that must come from within, from your life story,” said the Real Madrid striker. “Each person has a different relationship with the country they want to represent. When we talk about representing a country, we must talk about love and the history that binds you to that country, not just a sporting project.”

When asked about the fact that players trained in France, such as Aymeric Laporte (Morocco) and Ibrahim Mbaye (Senegal), chose to represent other nations, Kylian Mbappé refused to pass judgment. “From the moment you are French, born in France and have gone through all your stages in the French national team, I think there is nothing more natural than that. That is why I say the matter is very personal. Each person acts according to their story, their background and their attachment to the country. When the choice comes from the heart, it is difficult to challenge or comment on it.”

Ethan Mbappé’s situation reflects a recurring question in French football, where many players trained in French academies face choices regarding sporting nationality with both identity and sporting implications.
